OUR STORY

Crafted with care since 1899

Sandain crafts beautiful, durable and sustainable leather goods. Our bags are inspired by our long history and our Northern origins. We create with care for both people and the environment. Always have, always will.

Legacy

We know leather. Sandain’s story begins with Böle Tannery, located just south of the Arctic Circle in Sweden. Starting in 1899, we learnt to master the art of making leather using only three natural ingredients: spruce bark, river water, and time. From that leather we made all kinds of goods ranging from beak boots to home decoration and bags. This legacy has now been passed down four generations. The last 125 years is a journey that has taken us to many places. Fifty years ago, we went to Bangladesh and established the foundation for what is now our own factory. More recently we went to Stockholm, where we established our first flagship store. And the journey goes on.

Craft

Genuine craft matters. For over 125 years we’ve worked with ecological materials and authentic manufacturing methods. Sandain products are hand-made by our own artisans. The leather is vegetable tanned (100% chrome free) and full-grain. The lining is organic cotton. We value the beauty of the new bag, as well as the dignity of an aging product. Staying true to quality has granted us status as Purveyor to the Royal Court of Sweden since 1996.

Purpose

We create leather goods with kindness to nature and people. The long winters of Northern Sweden taught us to waste nothing and to care for each other. Sustainable production, fair trade and social responsibility are core values for us. We use only ecological materials, minimize waste, and make products that are to last - and age with grace. In 2018 we launched the Cow Funder Initiative, a uniquely circular program to give back to needing women in Bangladesh.
